Bike Battery
If you are attentive and give your bike battery the care it deserves, you can generally go anywhere from three to five years on the same battery before it needs to be replaced. Your motorcycle battery needs to be checked roughly every 2500 miles. Keep your battery terminals clean to avoid corrosion and inspect them to ensure they are securely connected to the battery itself.
Make sure your bike battery fluids are topped off and your battery is fully charged. Winter battery maintenance is a bit more extensive, especially if you will be storing your bike for the season. Keeping your battery charged when it is not in use is critical to avoid battery failure in the future.
Bike Tires and Wheels
Ideally you should check your tire pressure once a week before you go out for a ride so your tires are cooled down. This will give you the most accurate pressure reading. Do a visual check of your tires before every ride to ensure there are no punctures or cracking in your motorcycle tires that could cause them to go flat or rupture.
Checking your tire treads is the quickest and easiest way to tell if you need new tires. If you place a quarter inside the groove of your tire, you should have enough tire tread to pass Washington’s head on the front of the coin.
Bike Filters
Your air filter is one of the easiest things to maintain on your bike. If you change your motorcycle air filter as soon as it gets dirty and clogged with debris, you can keep it from negatively affecting the performance of your engine.
Ideally you should change your oil filter every 2000 miles. However if you use a synthetic oil, it is highly recommended that you change your oil filter every time you change the oil on your motorcycle.
Clutch and Throttle Controls
The last thing you need to keep an eye on is your clutch and throttle controls. When your control cables are maintained properly, you will have a better riding experience overall. Check your clutch and throttle at the start of each riding season. Make sure there is no visible wear or damage, your throttle tube and clutch cable barrel are lubricated properly and your clutch cables are always lubricated. If you routinely take your bike out for harder rides, you may need to check these periodically throughout the year as well.
