Tire tread is so important that there is even a legal limit. There are several ways to test the tread on your tires:

Tread Wear Indicators

Most motorcycle tires have tread wear indicators (TWIs) that run inside the tire’s grooves. When the indicator bars, small strips of rubber, become flush with the tire’s surface, it has reached the legal wear limit. Replace the tire immediately.

Tire Tread Coin Test

Another option to testing tread is the Quarter Test. Grab a quarter and turn it so Washington’s head is upside down. Place the quarter inside one of the tire’s grooves. If Washington’s head is visible, it’s time to get new tires.

Tire Tread Depth Gauge

The most accurate DIY method, a tread depth gauge, will provide tread depth measurement in 32nds of an inch.

While you can visually gauge the wear and tear of your tread, we will be happy to perform a tire inspection and give you the low-down.

Your Motorcycle Tire Shows an Unusual Pattern of Wear

For every mile you ride, your bike will endure some sort of wear and tear. But what if the wear and tear indicates an unusual pattern? What if wear and tear is only on one motorcycle tire?

Flat Spots

Whether you are a slower rider and mostly upright or a speed hound taking aggressive curves, your riding patterns become habitual. Thus, you will have tire wear that is indicative of repetitive lean patterns, angles and motions. Additionally, if your bike is left stationary for long periods of time, it is at risk for flat spots.

Scalloping

Often the result of unidirectional rotation, scalloping occurs when tread from the tailing edge is sharp but the tread from the leading edging becomes dull. Also referred to as cupping, the dulled edging will result in increased road vibration and loss of traction.

Mechanical Problems

Suspension, alignment, tire pressure and other mechanical problems can lead to unusual wear patterns.

If in doubt, schedule an appointment with Mike’s 71 Cycle. Our motorcycle tire shop has a large selection of used motorcycle tires at affordable prices.

A Motorcycle Tire Needs to be Replaced

Anytime you have a damaged motorcycle tire, replace it immediately. Look for these common signs your motorcycle tire is damaged:

Bulging

Internal air pressure will produce a bulge in your tire. A bulging area is extremely dangerous. We recommend using a trailer to transport your bike to a place where you can fix or repair the tire. In other words, do not ride your bike until the bulge is fixed.

Crazing

Cuts and cracks that result due to normal riding and tire aging are called Crazing. While minimal crazing is not always dangerous, it can be a sign of dry rot or a slow leak. Have your tires checked by a professional to avoid trouble such as a blowout.

Punctures

If you have a nail or any other undesirable item stuck in your tire, have it checked. DIY methods for removal and patching may provide a temporary fix; however, it’s best to have your tire inspected by a professional.

Your Motorcycle Tire’s Age Matters

Many factors can affect the lifespan of your motorcycle tires: weather conditions, storage, usage conditions, load, speed and tire pressure. Even maintenance and riding style will affect how quickly your tires age.

Like all things, your motorcycle tires will age and become old. For safety purposes, the maximum age of a motorcycle tire is six or seven years.

Mixing & Matching Motorcycle Tires is not Recommended

Motorcycle tires are designed to work together, in tandem. They are developed as a set and are intended to be used as a pair from the very beginning. Mixing and matching motorcycle tires puts you at risk for anomalies in traction, control and handling.

When you need to replace one motorcycle tire, it is best practice to replace both at the same time. Mixing and matching tire brands, sizes and styles will lead to an unpredictable ride.

Mixing and matching is just a big no-no. If cost is a concern and you are looking for cheap motorcycle tires, talk to one of our certified motorcycle mechanics. We have the best motorcycle tires at the best prices.
